‘Octane Pistols of Fury’, Silly Mobsters Worth Watching

Imagine the situations a skinnier, stupider, and utterly hilarious version of Tony Soprano would get into and you’ve got a pretty good idea about what you will be getting into with Octane Pistols of Fury. The brainchild of a collaboration of Escape Pod Films and Jet Lag Productions, both groups come out of the Channel 101 New York community, so they are no strangers to short-form episodic comedy. The show stars Andrew Pifko (The Godfather Video Game), Greg Stees (Vamps), Trevor Williams (Nice Brothers), and Chris Prine (Sandwich of Terror).

‘Sandwich of Terror’ From ‘Scissor Cop’ Chefs Delivers

What is it about a BLT that stands the test of time? As today’s trendy sandwich starts to grow mold and tomorrow’s takes sprouts, the BLT stays true. Sandwich of Terror is a new web series by the good folks at Escape Pod Films that takes the tried and true formula of The Twilight Zone and George Romero’s 80’s TV hit Tales from the Darkside and purposely delivers the comedy and camp that made these cult classics.

You might know the Brooklyn-based Escape Pod Films (E.P.F.) from their previous series, Scissor Cop, which took a few pot shots at serious police dramas and landed E.P.F. on the web series map and Channel 101 NY. If you liked Scissor Cop, chances are you’ll like Sandwich of Terror. Sandwich delivers quality writing and acting that has the aftertaste of early, not quite ripe The Kids in the Hall. Already picked up by Channel 101 NY and aired as part of the February screening at 92YTribeca, Sandwich of Terror stands out as original and unique parody that will have web series creators across the country saying, “Why didn’t I think of that!?”

‘Water and Power’, A Fecal Riot

Can a man marry a web series? I want to marry Water and Power. Maybe after you vote no on Prop 8, you can do a write-in ballot that will allow me to wed this show. Water and Power is about the plight of the office worker. Taking The Office one step further into the surreal, sublime and superlatively dry, creators Dan Harmon and Ryan Ridley approach the DWP with the gravitas and a little bit of the structure of Law and Order to give us three acts in what looks like under five minutes. Finally, a successful translation of TV format to the web.

Also starring, writing and directing, this is Ryan and Dan’s first collaboration and I’m so glad they did it. Ryan, plays a man of the people in Power, a kind of good cop to Dan’s bad cop on the Water side. Ryan is bright-eyed and wants to believe that people are inherently honest and good, and gets drunk to drown his pain when he is forced to chastise an old woman and holocaust survivor for using too much water. Dan is jaded, sometimes scruffy and takes a tough stance on the abuse of power. Even insofar as making racial stereotypes in episode one that on the water side leads to tragedy and on the power side, to a revelation about Armenians and the fact that they, ‘suck power like fleas in a barnyard’. I had no idea.

FLASHBACK: Before ‘Defenders of Stan’ there was ‘Jesus Christ: Supercop!’

Before there was Defenders of Stan, the longest running Channel 101 NY show ever, there was…Jesus Christ, Supercop. Both series were created by and star the same mastermind: Austin Bragg. If you read the title of the series, you have the premise. It’s Jesus Christ. Super. Cop.

Stan ‘Defends’ Prime Time Spot on Channel 101

‘The Defenders of Stan’ is a not your typical superhero story. Co-creator Austin Bragg, who plays Stan, explains, “The idea of the show originated from the concept of an X-Men universe taken to it’s logical extreme. We always see the beginning of the genetic evolution, where a handful of heroes battle it out in a world filled with humanity…but what happens at the end of that bell curve?”
