Battlefield 3 Music Video, DeStorm Stokes Up Franchise War (Interview)

Gamers around the world are abuzz with Electronic Art’s Battlefield 3 firing the first shots in the showdown with rival shooter, Activision‘s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. With Call of Duty: Find Makarov and Battlefield 3: Operation Gridiron, both franchises have utilized web video to pump up pre-release hype. Both games web content have struck a semi-bizarre ”prepare for our video game like you’re going war” tone that is a little too intense, after all video games are supposed to be fun, right?

So it’s relief to find YouTube content creators Tom Antos and DeStorm teaming up for a light hearted but still kick-ass video to get us pumped up for Battlefield 3.

Adrian Grenier Heads For the Farm

Adrian Grenier and Peter Glatzer have announced the debut of Young Farmers, a documentary-style series that underscores farm-to-table values.

The series, produced by Grenier’s and Glater’s multi-media platform SHFT and distributed on teen-focused shopping hub Lockerz, follows 10 young farmers as they grow their own food as a part of a larger environmental movement of sustainability.

“Our mission at SHFT is to convey sustainable living through video, design, art and culture,” said Grenier.” And Young Farmers does just that in a very personal, accessible way.”

This is Lockerz latest original series since The Homes, which featured Gilmore Girls stars Keiko Agena and Sean Gunn. Other Lockerz originals include Kill Spin and Marcy.

“Lockerz continues to feature compelling original content that ties into issues that are important to our Gen Z members,” said Kathy Savitt, Founder and CEO of Lockerz. “We are proud to partner with powerful environmental advocates like Adrian Grenier and Peter Glatzer to bring Young Farmers to a global audience of millions.”

What Americans Are Watching While At Work (Infographic)

Who doesn’t love a good infographic on a Monday? Courtesy of Geekosystem, we bring you this well brewed infographic by Column Five and Wistia based on data from a 2011 Harris Interactive Poll on what Americans are watching on their mobile phones while at work.

You see, while many workplaces block popular video sites like YouTube and Funny or Die, their mobiles still stream whole heaploads of video—64% of Americans stream mobile video at work. Much of it, the data alludes, is news at 25%, but still a non-trivial 15% of it falls under the ‘viral videos’ category.

Gamers Watch 61.9 Minutes of Machinima Every Month

ComScore recently published the latest edition of its monthly U.S. Online Video Rankings and the biggest news since August is that not a whole lot changed in September. The data from the marketing research company shows a marked stabilization in the lists of both the Top 10 U.S. Online Video Content properties and Top 10 YouTube Partner Channels month over month.

Google and Vevo maintained the #1 and #2 spots on the Total Unique Viewer Charts with 161.4 million and 57.3 million individuals respectively tuning in during the 30 days of September. Rounding out the rest of the top 10, in order are Micrsoft, Viacom, Facebook, Yahoo, Aol, NBC Universal, Turner, and Hulu, which (except for some minor jockeying of position) are the exact same companies in August’s Top 10 lists.

There’s very little change in the charts for YouTube’s Top 10 Partner Channels, too. The music video behemoths known as Vevo and Warner still reign supreme with 57.2 million and 28.8 million respective unique viewers, followed by Machinima, Maker Studios, Demand Media, Revision3, IGN, FullScreen, the Associated Press and Clevver.TV.

Again, those are the exact same Top 10 Partners on last month’s list with just a few minor changes in position. In fact, in the three months since comScore began tracking and reporting individual YouTube Partner data, there have only been 11 YouTube partners to make the company’s Top 10 Partner Charts. George Strompolos’ FullScreen bumped NextNewNetworks from the list in August and the names of the partners listed haven’t changed since.

It’s Tough to be a Teenager in ‘Squaresville’

Mountain Man producer and online video persona Matt Enlow has just released the first minisode for his highly anticipated new series Squaresville.

The slice-of-life comdey focuses on two childhood friends as they pass through teenage adolescence in the suffocating boredom of suburbia. Zelda (Mary Kate Wiles) and Esther (Kylie Sparks) are two misfit friends whose friendship faces the complicated, emotional, and hilarious challenges of teen romance and new social forces.

“I started Squaresville because I wanted to make something that would resonate emotionally with the online audience,” Enlow told Tubefilter. “In an era of disposable entertainment, and distractions, it’s really challenging to make something sincere. The show is a comedy at its core, but the characters are facing universal issues with growing up. Who you are as a kid, and who you want to be. It’s fun and entertaining, but I try to pack a left hook into every episode.”

Squaresville has set up a $12,000 fundraising campaign for the project on Kickstarter. Enlow has already shot the trailer and 6 mini-episodes, which serve as in-between episodes for longer “feature episodes.” Once principle production is completed, the show will have 6 feature episodes and 6 mini-episodes—the first half of Season 1.

The series features music from Now, Now and My First Earthquake.

‘Pioneer One’ Revisited: You Better Be Watching This Show

Today we’re revisiting a series that I kinda gushed over last year. Since reviewing the pilot, Pioneer One has since been able to crowdfund five more episodes for six in total, they won the drama category for 2010′s NYTVF (and should’ve won pretty much everything else. Illuminati Brothers? Greg And Donny? Really?), and their first [...]

Film Students Pitch Freddie Wong with Video

First off, if your name is either Freddie Wong or Brandon Laastch, it would be a wise idea to get in touch with these guys below. Seriously.

For everyone else, this is a story of how today’s filmmakers are drafting up their own playbooks of how to get a film career started. This is the age of the online filmmaker, a time when the medium has firmly shed its tertiary status behind the festivals and studio routes—and is ground zero for exposure to worldwide audiences. This is especially true for the internet-native generation that now fills top film schools, who grew up hooked on now six years of YouTube and Vimeo creators experimenting and improving on the art of low-cost entertainment.

David Bolen is still in film school, and a pretty respectable one at that. He won’t graduate from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts until 2013, but he and his friend Arnold Aldridge aren’t waiting around hoping their internship hookups pan out. Instead they are taking a cue from another filmmaking duo, Freddie and Brandon, who turned an obsessive passion for After Effects and high-energy fight scenes into one of the world’s most popular online channels and a heavy dose of mainstream attention.

Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine Signs with a Giant

The worst thing about Jay Smooth is the dude doesn’t make enough videos.

The born and bred Harlemite and Upper West Sider, mastermind behind HipHopMusic.com, and “founder of New York’s longest running hip hop radio show, WBAI’s Underground Railroad” (which has blasted beats of extremely talented and underexposed artists over the airwaves since 1991) has delivered sporadic cultural and political criticisms and eloquent observations on the human condition under the banner of Ill Doctrine by way of his webcam since June 2007.

But whether it’s that the guy’s simply very busy or it’s the little hater inside, Smooth hasn’t been able to nail a consistent release schedule since his original web series debut. Hopefully that will change with his new relationship with Giant Magazine.

Smooth recently teamed up with the “smart celebrity, style, and culture” publication to produce a what seems to be monthly series based on his already crowd pleasing, socially conscious, overexposed editorials addressed directly to the camera. In The Giant Word, Smooth investigates peculiar buzzwords, phrases, and tactics used in the political arena.
