Marc Hustvedt: "Is there a legislative debate at all or do politicos try to stay out of this."

Unfortunately, there is no powerful lobbying group fighting for genital integrity of all children, including boys. This issue has not gained the attention of the politicos. There are some groups that are growing and developing a following. And, thanks to the Internet, many men and women are learning about the circumcision instead of blindly altering the genitals of their baby boys.

See MGM Bill - Stopping Male Genital Mutilation through legislation at http://www.mgmbill.org/

Intact America at http://intactamerica.org/ is lobbying to stop routine infant circumcision.

Jesus Christ, What other natural healthy body part do we needlessly cut off children? None...
This one happens to be an erogenous zone as well.
Only a sicko would consider cutting off something such as a foreskin without immediate medical/therapeutic need that otherwise cannot be cured "good"

Why do Americans have such a genital mutilation fetish? Do you honestly believe your genitals are cleaner than mine? I've never had an infection, i love my foreskin and would never have it severed from me. Any logical/ethical person would come to the conclusion that if it's possible that ONE person would love his foreskin it's possible that ANYONE could, including your own son.

This isn't a defective organ, it causes no problems unless you prematurely retract it (which so many stupid/uneducated pediatricians/doctors try to do)

Your Medical Textbooks DONT EVEN HAVE FORESKINS! How the hell is it a surgically altered organ is the standard depiction in your medical texts? It's as if your medical professionals are intentionally kept in the dark.

What drives a parent to have their son's first experience of his genitals be of circumcision? Pure ignorance and unwitting bias. Leave the kid's genitals alone.

This is not a rational topic. If it were, circumcision would have become obsolete decades ago, as it is in the rest of the English-speaking world, or never have become customary, as it never did in Scandinavia, Europe, South America or most of Asia.

It's a hot topic because you're telling people a deeply entrenched custom they've never questioned is wrong. It's like saying they should stop eating bread or drinking coffee. You're telling parents-in-law they were wrong to do it to their son, and men there is something lacking from their penis, and true or false, they don't like that.

It's only become a public hot topic recently because of the Internet. Now all the men who have secretly hated being circumcised can at last come out and say so, along with all the men who were bullied for being intact. People can now share all the stories of circumcisions gone wrong, of being browbeaten to circumcise, or just of how much they hated watching it.

@Hugh7, fair enough. What do you think makes this debate such a hot topic? I don't have kids and just kind of stumbled into this whole debate, but man, some people get worked up over it. Is there a legislative debate at all or do politicos try to stay out of this.

MarcHustvedt:"So I guess circumcision is like the Mac/PC debate but for parents??" No, because at the end of that debate, one way or the other, you have a whole computer. It's more like a debate you'd have about whether to cut the mouse of your kid's computer, because dust and stuff gets in the mouse, and he can do everything he needs to do using just the keyboard.

And if you can't agree and dad has grown up never using a mouse, I think he should decide.

@Casey McKinnon: "We even decided to have it done by an actual rabbi for comedic purposes (neither of us are Jewish) :)"
You mean, as in "Seinfeld" (http://www.circumstitions.com/TVSitcomsS-Z.html#seinfeld)? I hope your designated Kramer is more successful at protecting the baby.

Assuming you meant "cosmetic", what makes you assume this is a change from the natural appearance of his penis that he will want when he grows up? If not, by what right do you do it, since you will have him for less than 20 years of his lifespan? Do you plan any cosmetic surgery if it's a girl?

I would say to any mother considering circumcision for their son: please research the subject and do whatever you need to to protect your son.

I am a man in my 40s and deeply, deeply resent being circumcised. More and more men are becoming extremely distressed upon learning that an important body part was removed before they had a chance to have a say in the matter.

The most sensitive parts of the penis are in the foreskin and are forever lost to circumcision. This fact is not even in dispute.

With the rate of circumcision in the US in freefall (was over 90%, currently around 50% and dropping), you son will be in the minority as he grows up. The US is catching up to the rest of the world wich does not circumcise (outside of misguided religious beliefs).

Your son may very well come to resent you for permitting a very important, normal and healthy part of his penis to be amputated.

Please spare your son from this painful and entirely unnecessary ritual. You should be aware that some individual doctors promote the practice, they do not speak for the medical community. The medical community speak with one voice on circumcision: not a single medical organisation on Earth recommends circumcision. Several (Canada, United Kingdom, Australia..) come out very strongly against the practice. Children are not born needing surgery.

I understand many men are happy in their circumcised state and seek to defend the practice - and their masculinity and sexuality at the same time. Unfortunately, the reality is that a penis which is missing its moving parts and most sensitive parts can only ever experience second-rate sex. Enjoyable no doubt, but always second rate - much like a man born with one working eye thouroughly enjoys 'seeing'.

Be aware some Rabbis still practice what's known as a metzitzah b'peh circumcision, which involves the oral sucking of blood from the raw circumcision wound on the baby's bloodied penis. True! Look it up.

Why would you hand your perfect baby to a stranger with a knife, which he is going to use to cut into your son's penis...?

Everything about circumcision is dark and creepy and surrounded by myths of benefit.

Please, please follow your maternal instincts and stand up for your son and his basic human rights and genital integrity. It is your fundamental responsibility as a mother.

As was mentioned, we have federal law that prohibits the modification (of any kind) of the female genitalia. Yet, we can do what we want with little boys. Also, cleanliness has been mentioned. Taking care of little boys is easier than little girls. You just wash the outside of the penis as if it were a finger. Under no circumstances should the foreskin be drawn back over the glans until the boy does it for himself. At birth, the foreskin is fused to the glans (like the clitoris). Those adhesions break down over time. Most foreskins can be pulled back between the ages of three and five. However, full retraction may take until puberty. Forced retraction by parents and doctors is the number one reason that circumcision may become necessary for pre-teens. With a little education (very little really), the care of the foreskin is easy and the boy should not experience any difficulties.

This is sickning, I was circumcised as a baby and I 100% resent my parents and I have disowned them, sure there were other factors, but yes circumcision is definitely part of it, they had NO RIGHT to mutilate MY BODY, its MY CHOICE. It should be illegal for boys, just like it is girls, for anyone under the age of 18.

And all this BS about it being healthier, is bullshit, plain and simple, Americans looking for ways to justify it, 80% of the world is in.tact and does not have problems.

For the record, I am restoring my foreskin and no son of mine will be mutilate at birth.
