‘HD Nation’ Actually in HD, Levels Up Your Gear

Now that the switch has finally been thrown, marking the end of analogue television and the beginning of the all-digital era, HDTVs are flying off the shelves. But which equipment should you buy? And what content should you enjoy on it? HD Nation might be the perfect show for answering that question.

HD Nation is the latest web series from San Francisco-based internet TV network, Revision3 (the good people that bring you Diggnation, Tekzilla, Film Riot), and even though the show itself is only available online, its mission statement is to be a guide to the best in HD content, no matter where it comes from: over-the-air, online, Blu-Ray. Allow me to pitch a potential tag: “If it’s in HD, it’s on HD Nation.” (Call my agent if you like it.)

The hosting duties are filled by Robert Heron and Tekzilla host Patrick Norton , both former anchors of tech news/reviews show DL.TV .

Paris Hilton, Simon ‘Rex’ Pilot Hits Web

Somehow most of the web missed this 23-minute click-worthy gem called Rex which quietly was posted online recently. Think Paris Hilton, Jamie Pressly, Lance Bass and former MTV VJ Simon Rex, who was later revealed to be an adult film star, in a comedy about drumming up tabloid scandal. Who better than this lot?

Created by TV development vet Guy Shalem, the team behind the half-hour indie pilot has been running a campaign on Facebook to build up its fan base while pitching it to networks. I talked to Shalem, who said he was frustrated after selling pilots to ABC and NBC that never saw the light of day.

Shalem, who wrote the series along with Rob Kolson, casted a host of headline drawing names like Hilton, Rex Brian Huskey and Alias star Victor Garber. Shooting on spec, the mid-five-figure budget covered costs for locations, food and below the line crew. Shalem admits that he called in “a lot of favors.”

'Big Ideas' are Insightful, Beautiful, GOOD

Is there a word for naming something after a stated goal, in the spirit of onomatopoeia? Because such a word would be quite useful right now to describe GOOD, a magazine and web community devoted to doing good works in the world through innovative technology and information dispersal. Much like SEED magazine or TED talks, [...]

‘Private’ Casting Race Heats Up Before Series Launch

I’m not sure what it is that hooked me into this whole Private web series casting call, but it’s got me. Maybe it’s the “public” nature of this thing, opening up a series regular role to would-be teen stars all over the country to submit videos for why they should land the role of vicious prep model Kiran Hayes on the series. Or maybe it’s the fact that it’s a reality competition for a web series gig. Either way, it’s intriguing.

Since its announcement back in May, the producers received hundreds of videos from eligible teens before widdling down the crop to a final three (Janine, Nicole and Sanna) who were flown out to LA for a Bravo-style reality competition for the role. For judges, they’ve brought in the show’s writers, Sarah Kucserka and Veronica Becker along with Gossip Girl executive producer Bob Levy.

‘Legend of Neil’ Season 2 Boasts Musical Romp

Atom hosted a special preview screening Tuesday night of the first three episodes of The Legend of Neil season 2, revealing what had been rumored earlier this summer—the season does indeed contain a 9-minute musical episode. We’re talking a colorful set of original songs that make a not so subtle nod to the web’s musical gold standard, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

Creators Sandeep Parikh (The Guild) and Tony Janning opened the evening with Neil star Janning acting out the show’s ignominious opening. Janning returns as underachieving everyman Neil, who faces a new set of life turds this time around. Good thing for his quantum space bending game console, as he’s right back as Link inside the world of Zelda once again. Also returning is Felicia Day who brings back her role as the pint-sized Fairy.

Following the screening, there was a brief Q&A with Parikh and the cast members Janning, Mike Rose, Scott Chernoff taking questions.

In a Bear Market, Everyone Needs 'Odd Jobs'

When I’m trying to find something to do on summer nights aside from being alone and reading My So-Called Life fanfiction completely bored by going out with my extensive, awesome, and numerous social circles, I often take a respite from the known, real world and venture into one that’s more digital, anonymous and classified. Craigslist, [...]
