With USA Network’s Emmy-winning drama Monk set to wrap its seven eight-season run beginning in July, the cabler has announced that the series starring Tony Shalhoub as an obsessive-compulsive detective will live on after the drama concludes its run in the summer.
USA recently confirmed that it is developing a 10-episode web series revolving around Adrian Monk’s childhood.
While no formal announcement has been made on if Emmy winner Shalhoub will appear, USA has been mum on additional details including when the web series will premiere, their length and if Andy Breckman, who has penned more than 100 episodes of the show, will contribute to the writing corps.
The series’ web presence currently includes video highlights of the show and display Monk’s obsessive-compulsive behavior as well as Q&A interviews from Monk’s creative team.
Monk has been a ratings hit for USA, recently hitting a series-high in total viewers for its Season 7 finale in February. The series, which recently added Hector Elizondo to its cast as Monk’s therapist, returns for its eighth and final season July 18 on USA.
UPDATE: Sources tell us the web series is expected to shoot later this month (May) and June.

Actually the 8th season starts this summer (July or August) and not the 7th season, as you wrote.
According to USA Network, the “seventh season [returns] on Friday, July 18 at 9/8c.”
A mini Tony Shaloub, who do you cast?? I could see Shia LaBoeuf if he wasn’t a movie star already.
After some confusion, it appears that Monk is in fact heading into Season 8. Correction has been made above.
I love the show Monk, but I would not tune in to this web series. I like Monk, because the character deals with various adult onset disorders. Everyu show is structured the same way, so every show is basically the same song. But what makes it all come together for me is the ensemble cast supporting Shalhoub. Taking all that into account, changing the storyline to earlier in his childhood seems like a new show altogether. Monk probably didn’t have OCD in his childhood. The ongoing gag oon his brothers might be hard to work in. Didn’t he have like five or six brothers that appeared? I know John Turturro and Steve Zahn are two of his brothers… He has more I can’t remember… Anyway, Adrian Monk’s motivations in the series are widely based on the character’s issues with his dead wife. That doesn’t translate to his childhood. And without that ensemble cast and elaborate adult character traits, I can’t see how they can call this an extension of the “Monk” series. If it’s a kid-oriented private eye drama, then why not just call it something else and say it’s original? Why do they always have to re-invent existing work? Where is the originality? The creativity? Can we survive on franchises, alone? How long will it take before every new movie released to the public is some remake of something else?
Todd, I have to disagree with you on almost every point, except that we both enjoy watching the show and the supporting cast is superb!
Monk had OCD as a child and Trudy was very caring in helping him be around people (maintained his policeofficer job with Leland as his partner, had a good relationship with Trudy’s parents, etc.) so when she died he lost his grounding and became the “overly obessive Monk”. He has one brother, Turturro and one half- brother. Episodes with Turturro show in no uncertain terms that Monk’s mom was the catalyst of both sons disorders (not the hal-brother)and dad leaving because he could no longer stand to be around all the complusions only added more trauma and issues to the boys lives. That’s why both children riased by the mom have a compulsive disorder of some type.
I love watching the show and am thrilled to see Little Monk. It worked well for Battlestar Galatica on Sci-Fi to have web shows and I believe it will here as well.
Isn’t it interesting how two people can watch the same show and both enjoy it but pick up different story archs or development from it? Proves what a great show it was from, writing, acting, directing and on and on. Best wishes to them all, my family will miss the Monk family!
