As a rule, the Danish speak fantastic English. Some of the Danes in Copenhagen are so ‘accent’-free you might think they’re American. But there’s something tinny-sounding about Reaching Julie, Dane Fili Seifert’s 10-part web series for Filmaka. The show reinforces my unofficial mantra of short-form, online video content: it’s tough to pull off a drama [...]

Perhaps the answers have finally arrived, thanks to one man who has secluded himself in the name of exploration, spirituality and damn good hallucinogens. His name is Jonas Hawkinus and he’s the star of the new web series, Mountain Man which premiered this week on Strike.TV.
“Mountain Man is a surreal comedy adventure series chronicling the escapades of ex-folk star, anti-government survivalist Jonas Hawkinus,” said producer Matt Enlow. In the series, Hawkinus, played by Mike H. Miller, secludes himself in his underground lair he calls the “Sanctuary”, where he basks his ego and paranoia with the most psychedelic conspiracies—from mistakenly identifying hikers as secret government agents to knocking a satellite out of space utilizing only his power chakras.

Where do serial killers come from? Do we blame the parents? It’s an easy enough excuse for me. Crazy adults breed crazy children. Remember that one kid who would eat anything for a nickle – worms, live moths, puke from the third grader who got sick after lunch while playing in the tractor tire out [...]

Amazon-owned IMDb, the mega-database for all things entertainment, has been skirting the issue for a while, but this week let out hints that it will finally be adding a new category for original web series and one-off web videos. Veteran web series creator Casey McKinnon (Galacticast) reports on her blog with news out of Austin’s SXSW Interactive conference that IMDb founder and managing director Col Needham states that the company is in fact preparing to add the separate categories for online content.

Immediately following our announcement of The Streamy Awards Category Finalists, an interesting and important conversation erupted on Tubefilter. The Academy selections were accused of being “incestuous,” “rigged” and a “popularity contest,” that is “suckling at [Hollywood's] teat.” Ouch! Many of the comments were excessively harsh, if myopic, but they do raise important questions that we [...]

Today kicked off the official start of new interactive thriller web series Harper’s Globe from the team at EQAL, creators of lonelygirl15 and KateModern. Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried, the creative minds behind the series popularized highly interactive low-fi video blogging dramas, basically setting the bar for the genre.
The online series stars former lonelygirl15 regular Melanie Merkosky, as newcomer Robin Matthews to the sleepy vacation island who is tasked with digitizing old news archives from the local paper. Her mysterious past and penchant for video presumably make her the fitting conduit to get to the bottom what’s really going on around the island—that is, people getting killed off one by one.

Until the recent economic collapse hit and home values plummeted, “flipping” fixed-up houses had grown from a small movement of handy folks with foresight into a cottage industry. “How-to” guides and home-improvement shows proliferated to the point where it seemed like every other high-numbered cable channel featured it’s own Bob Vila or Norm Abrams. Now, [...]

Hollywood’s toe-dipping online for the past few years always seemed to tread somewhere between afterthought or novelty. The real action was on network and eventually cable TV, with the web being a place seldom inhabited by the heavy television players. With standout teen hits like The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Josh Schwartz could be excused for letting others take the bumbling early steps into web television.
Tuesday marked the debut of Schwartz’ long awaited web series Rockville, CA on TheWB.com and with it the launch of his web television conquest to tap the growing hordes of kids for whom the internet is their entertainment.
Schwartz could see a radically shifted music industry; one of smaller labels and rabid online followings. It’s only fitting that with the old-guard television biz hitting some of those same winds, that he takes this story to the web. The series stars a handful of young TV regulars like Alexandra Chando (As The World Turns) and Andrew West (Privileged), Jelly Howie (Dexter) and Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars). The 20-somethings all spend their nights at Club Rockville, all with different gigs, from club rat to A/R rep, but all there for the same thing—the music.
