Last night was special. When we wrote months ago about web television growing up this year we were serious. This isn’t just a novelty or sideshow to real entertainment. Web television is entertainment.
Last night was its coming out party.
In front of a sold-out crowd of over 1300 guests at the Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles, the first ever Streamy Awards show honored 2008’s best web series and the talented people behind them. Winners were selected by the International Academy of Web Television after a public submission process that saw tens of thousands of entries.
The stars of web television turned out strong including Neil Patrick Harris, Joss Whedon, Felicia Day, Taryn Southern, David Faustino, Zoe Bell, Alex Albrecht, Zadi Diaz, Jessica Rose, Illeana Douglas, Rosario Dawson, iJustine, Amber Lee Ettinger, Shira Lazar, Leah D’Emilio, The Sklar Brothers, Jeff MacPherson, Lisa Kudrow and many more. (For photos of the event check out Kodak’s Flickr stream, Wire Image, and official Academy photography from the Bui Brothers.)
For the thousands of people who tuned in to the live stream of the show, they may not have realized they were a part of history, watching the first ever professionally produced awards show live streamed to the internet. Viewers from all over the world watched, without any distribution restrictions, and shared the play-by-play with constant flow of tweets and updates. You all broke the news in real time, the way it should be. Here is the full list of Streamy Award winners:

On behalf of the hosting organizations, Tubefilter, TilzyTV and NewTeeVee, we want to thank everyone who helped make this show happen. This show came together much like the web series we admire and write about every day—a collaboration of donated time, equipment, resources and passion by incredibly talented people who truly believe in what is happening in entertainment. Thank you especially to the show’s director, Gary Smith, and producer Zack Smith who fully embrace this emergence of web television, bringing a level of professionalism to the production that is unmatched.
Thanks so much to all of our sponsors including Kodak and Episodic, for taking a chance on this unproven idea and backing it up with the support we needed to make it happen—Microsoft Zune, KoldCast TV, Take180, DailyMotion, mDialog, RDF USA, Lifeforce Entertainment, blip.tv we could not have done this without you.

It was an awesome night and Twitter and The Guild chat were abuzz with all the news. The live stream teased us into thinking it wasn’t going to be on but, just before the start, it burst into life.
It’s great to be a part of history!
Definitely felt like history was being made. I missed the first bit of the ceremony, though…is it archived anywhere?
Thanks Tubefilter for working so hard to make this happen. It is amazing what you have accomplished in such a short amount of time. Can’t wait for the Streamy Awards in 2010!
Congrats on a fantastic show. We appreciate all the work that went into it. Hope you guys enjoy a break now.
You guys should feel incredibly proud of what you were able to put on with the Streamys. Fantastic job, and I was just glad to be a part of it! :)
The Streamys were AWESOME! Thanks for having me as a volunteer. Wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
Okay, now that you all have proved you can pull off an incredible inaugural awards show we are going to be expecting more great things from you guys.
I’m currently working on a list that includes solving Global Warming, World Hunger and of course Web Video Monetization.
I’ll be in touch soon.
I saw most of the Streamy Awards ceremony (I had to leave at the Best Animation nominations), and they were AWESOME! I love that it was so casual, that everyone was so relaxed and easygoing. Congrats to Dr. Horrible and The Guild, and to everyone who was nominated and/or awarded Saturday night!
Outside of your little bubble, you can hear crickets chirping.
What an impressive-looking production… Congrats!
It was an amazing night – thank you for letting 1928 Jewelry be a part of it.
Had a great time at the awards, kudos to everybody who put the awards together. Can’t wait for next year!
I’m sorry. What I said before was moronic. I’m just sad and lonely outside the bubble.
Congrats on a brilliant showing! It was truly an honor “just to be nominated.” It really was. It was nice to be at a show where everybody was on the same page and of the same mindset – creativity above anything else.
I met some amazing people, had a ton of laughs, and was truly humbled to be included in such a dazzling array of talented folks.
Thanks again guys!
(…I wish my first time was such a rousing success…..)
Truly impressive… the Streamys were a huge hit and a borderline miracle in terms of what you pulled off in short order. Thanks so much for letting us at Next New Networks be a part of it.
Well done all. Every year it will get better and better. Congratulations to all involved. We had fun
