Sandeep Parikh and Felicia Day introduced the opening montage “2008 Year in Web Television” at Saturday night’s 1st Annual Streamy Awards, streamed live from a packed house at the Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles. Outlining the explosive evolution of web television over the past years, Felicia noted, “this isn’t just television on your computer, these are shows that shine brightest in this new era of entertainment. We communicate pathos, joy, and sorrow, often in under five minutes. Before we start the awards, we’re going to take a look back at what happened in web television in 2008.”

EQAL, the social entertainment company behind hit web series like lonelygirl15 and KateModern, announced recently that they had partnered with Nagoya-based TV and radio advertising company Shinto Tsushin to bring dubbed versions of lonelygirl15 and KateModern to Japan and to produce an original LG15 series set in Japan.
The show – and its side stories KateModern (starring the Streamy-nominated Tara Rushton), LG15: The Resistance, and Polish-speaking n1ckola – are all centered around a group of young women with rare physical properties that make them the target of a mysterious organization. It was the LG15 shows that established EQAL’s reputation for mixing TV production with social networking websites – the whole series feels kind of like an alternate reality game.

Broads, The Series can definitely be defined as series embracing girl power based on the recently released trailer. Director Tiffany Loria has no doubts about the purpose of the project: to empower women. The series stems, Loria says, from “my personal search to define who I am.”
The show will highlight a wide variety of high achieving women over a twelve episode series, each woman getting her own episode as a chance to tell her story. Someof the show’s “broads” include singer/ actress Dana Fuchs (Across the Universe), “peacemaker” Karen Doubilet who founded the valiant nonprofit PeacePlayers in an effort to get divided ethnic groups to unite through sports, and philanthropist Sylvia Allen godmother to over 800 children at an Ugandan primary school.

Sure, one (very big) election is over and 2008’s campaign heartthrob Amber Lee Ettinger, aka Obama Girl, officially won us over with her crooning for the soon-to-be President. The star of NextNewNetworks’ Barely Political is now gearing up with a tech offshoot Barely Digital, but she hasn’t ditched her political vote-rallying ways.
Now she’s getting out the vote for the one of the toughest races on the interwebs—the Streamy Awards Audience Choice Award for Best Web Series! Yes, it’s a brutal battle of campaign slogans, robocallers and vicious attacks on all sides. That never really scared off Obama Girl before, so why should this slugfest?
